Description

Mothula, the seventh boss from Legend of Zelda; Link to the Past.

Mothula is a reocurring boss in the Zelda series. It reapears as both a mini boss and a normal mob. It is a flying arthropod, a giant moth creature as the name implies. It is said to be heavily influenced by Mothra from Godzilla in design.

In the games, its design does not change all that dramatically. Similar to Ghoma it has one large yellow eye on its head and usually six legs, or sometimes four. In Wind Waker its wings are more like giant plates and the colours are more muted than previous designs. In my design I only gave it two legs. I'm not really sure why, I just thought it looked interesting with only two; but I gave it a long tail it can curl round things to compensate for lack of limbs. I gave it three eyes; two insectlike eyes and one large eye. It's snout is similar to a preying mantis or stick insect, but I also admade it a little rodentlike as well. Some moth heads are really cute if you look past the fact they are moths. (I personally really do not like moths all that much!) The wings always had eye shapes in them in the games reminiscent of moths in real life; some eye shapes on moths and butterflies are similar to owl eyes or other bird eyes to scare away predictors. I liked this idea and incorporated them into the wings. The wings themselves were interesting to design; I didn't want to do just normal moth wings. I liked the plate wings used in Wind Waker. I thought about making the wings sharp and dangerous looking. I then looked up the shapes of sickles and scimitars and used their shapes to make up the joints and tips. I used to do fencing and love the various shapes of different swords and knives from different cultures and love the curved blade of the scimitar.
